Grin and Berry It People!

Good morning! Today is the day before our HUGE 6th birthday Riley Rockstar Music Video Party! I need a little creative juice to keep my energy up! My favorite juices are:
The Ruby Red
 2 Beets
2 cups Pineapple
1 Apple
and sometimes ginger
add a little water (a shot glass full)
shake over ice and pour- serves 3

The Green Machine
1/2 a bunch Spinach (has to be fresh not in a box, it yields more)
1/2 a bunch Parsley (to taste. I like a lot)
10- leaves Mint
1- Apple
1- Lemon
muddled tarragon (optional)
Muddle fresh tarragon into a shaker. Squeeze the lemon over it. Add ice. Pour the green juice in. Shake. Pour- serves 3

Age 4- The Year of the Princess

Have you all read the book "Cinderella Ate My Daughter"? It is an amazing read on the history of marketing for children...from colors for both girls and boys (pink used to be a baby boy color) to those beloved princesses. Some Disney genius who had a little girl noticed trend of dress up, and poof a new industry was born. The book really helped me to come to terms with the whole princess fad. I was one of those people, before having kids, who swore I'd never let my daughter be taken over by the princess phenomenon...uh well, then I had a daughter. She is tough, likes to climb trees and rocks, and at age 4 fell in love with princesses. So, for this special birthday we combined princesses with our favorite magician, the Amazing Max. It was a royal treat! For the cake we used a Wilton castle pan and a fresh strawberry cake! Yum. We personalized everyone's water bottles with homemade labels. Miss Christine came as Snow White and did make up for all. Everyone felt like magical royalty for a few hours!

Pirate Princess Party

As Riley's fifth birthday countdown began I wanted to find a way to recycle our past few events. Rye helped out by coming up with a pirate princess theme. We crafted a scavenger treasure hunt. The kids created their own ice cream treats, the girls from Mali B made a delicious Belle pirate cake, and no one walked the plank. Arrggg.

The Goal...Have Fun!

This was the year of super soccer stars. Rye turned three and scored a huge team of friends and family to celebrate.

Central Park Tea Party Time

We threw Riley a tea party fit for a queen on her second birthday. We decked out the great hill in central park with festive decor from Oriental Trading, including bubbles and butterfly cups!

Birthday Countdown- The Year of Cake (age 1)

Our little Riley will be 6 very soon, so I thought I'd take a look back at the past 5 years of celebration. We had two family parties for her 1st birthday back in 2008. The Elmo cake was for the bama fam and the Moo Baa La La La cake, inspired by Rye's fav Sandra Boynton book, was made by Samantha Orti for our Great Neck family. I hope these next few party posts inspire you with a theme for your own little one's special day!

To Boston, From Space

Our condolences go out to the families in Boston. This is a photo of the city from space. It was posted Monday by Canadian astronaut Comander Chris Hadfield (@Cmdr_Hadfield) who lives in the space station. A view of life from a different perspective. Boston we love you.

The Gift of Presence

Relax. I think these cookie cutters from Sur La Table say it all. Let's help save the future by living in the present. What a gift. I'm grateful for the good things in my life!

Child of Light

http://www.investors.com/image/bulbs_800_345.jpg.cms

Here is my thought for the day...human beings are like electric currents of light. There are switches that turn our awareness on. An example of this, from an early age, is a young child learning to read. I think adults have the same ability to shift their perception. Things needed to flip the switch:

1. Willingness
2. A Good Mentor
3. Mirroring
4. Repetition

When children begin to have the desire to read, you can engage them as a mentor and read to them, and have them read to you. It is a process that can sometimes take time, but it eventually happens.

I think this is how adults grow. It is how I grow. If I surround myself with mentors/light and have a desire for my spirit to be engaged I can shift existing ways of thinking that will evolve my being. It takes repetition, but it works!

What's the reward?
A human existence of BEING not just doing. A life of nurture and love. A place on earth filled with warm glowing molten lava yumminess... Just for starters...

I'm jumping into the Lava and Light baby! Come with me?

Dining by Design

Event designer David Stark's team did a great job designing this table for Benjamin Moore Paints at DIFFA's (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) Dining by Design event.

I think the faux paint cans would be a sassy addition to a child's art party with a finger paint table cloth! Let the kids create the cloth and help design an art project they can all do together. Fun.

Magic Monday Birthday Plan

Today is a magic Monday post and birthdays are on my mind. April is a big month to celebrate in our family. Riley was my birthday present 6 years ago, and we have a delightful new cousin who is also a Taurus. This year Rye is really helping plan her own soiree.  In the photo she is reviewing her decor choices for the Music Video Rock Party. The Oriental Trading catalog is viewed more like a magazine for pleasure in our home. She eagerly waits for its arrival to dream up her next bash (a real chip off the old block, I type, proudly). This year I've given her a small budget to choose a few special items. I'm hoping this is an early lesson in financial planning (Are you rolling your eyes right now?) I'll let you know how it goes.  I'm super excited about the theme and I hope the kids love making their own music video (a la the Junior Fresh Beats on Nick Jr.)! More party plan posts to follow!

Happiness

This photo always make me happy. It is a felt placemat that the amazing Sisi Soetrisno created for our Splenda Mother's Day event. What brings you joy?
 Happy spring everyone.

De-tangling a hair mystery

My mom would never let me have long hair as a child. I look back at photos of me in the eighth grade with a short boy cut, glasses and braces and still cringe. Now that I have my own little girl -wow- it make sense why I had short hair my entire young adult life... TANGLES.

Since I'm still healing my own inner child, creating her best hair experience matters. Here is the knowledge I am learning in the process.

When Riley decided to grow her hair long ---OUCH--- our morning routines were pretty painful for everyone. At first, Riley would get upset BEFORE the brush even touched her hair. Do you have that problem too? Well, after consulting a variety of experts, we finally figured out our own solutions. The key seems to make sure the hair is dry before bed (a tip from my husband, who has amazing hair).

Option 1: Overnight Success
Step 1: Rye washes her hair.
Step 2: I use a leave in conditioner, like California Baby Leave In or Rinse Out. It is key to find one where the specific use is "leave in" as if you use regular adult conditioner it can itch the scalp.
Step 3: While she is still in bath or shower, we comb out hair gently. She often does this herself.
Step 4: We blow dry her hair on the low, warm setting and I use a round bristle brush. This takes about 10 minutes to get her hair almost dry.
Step 5: (optional) the Satin Pillowcase. We don't have this, but I know moms who love it for children with very long hair.

When she wakes up she still runs a brush threw her hair, but there are very few knots. This solution lasts about three days with my daughter's hair.

Option 2: Quick Fix
If we have stubborn knots in the AM my quick fix is to park Rye in front of a cartoon, saturate her hair with a spray conditioner, you can make your own, or we use Kiss My Face detangler spray, section off the top of her hair with a clip, and use the Knot Genie brush, starting with the under hair first. This take about 5-10 minutes also. She will now do this herself, so it frees me up to do my own morning hair!

Option 3: The Best One
Have someone else do your daughter's hair. The mother-daughter hair connection seems to be very tangled.

I share these tips with you in hopes of sparing you the squirrel's nest of knots and, at least, this particular morning drama! What are your hair tricks? Please share!

Got Veggies?

I love an unusual presentation for kid challenged food. Sometimes making things appealing also means making it fun! We created this crudite for my good friend's housewarming party back in 2005, but I think you could do a smaller version of this for your little king or queen at their next party. And, here's a dip the grown ups and kids will like.

Delicious dip recipe compliments of Martha Stewart Living July 2008

  • YieldMakes 2 1/3 cups
    Serves 6

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium Vidalia or other sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 8 ounces (6 cups) fresh spinach, stemmed
  • 1 ounce (1 cup) watercress leaves, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 avocado, halved, pitted, and peeled
  • 1 cup plain nonfat yogurt, preferably Greek
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, such as Tabasco
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • Crudites (such as spears of English cucumber, peeled baby carrots, and trimmed radishes), for serving

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, and cook until softened, about 8 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low, add garlic, and cook, stirring occasionally, until onion and garlic are very soft and golden, about 20 minutes. Add spinach, and cook, tossing often, until wilted, about 4 minutes. Let cool slightly.
  2. Puree mixture in a food processor until smooth. Add watercress, avocado, yogurt, lemon zest and juice, hot sauce, and salt, and season with pepper. Puree until smooth. Transfer to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 3 days). Stir the dip, and serve with crudites.

Laughter is awesome. Laughter is fun. I borrowed this joke from able2know.org. My entire family cracked up. I hope it inspires you to laugh and share your own humor with others!

Knock Knock

Who's There?

Olive Toop

Olive Toop Who?

So do I, but I don't brag about it.

This post tonight was inspired because I was at a deeksha class led by an amazing lightgiver Margaret Nichols. There were people laughing in a quiet room and it filled my entire spirit. Thank you Margaret.

What gets you excited?

My 5-year-old has a loose tooth. About 10 times a day she lets out a little scream of excitement "Mom I forgot I had a loose tooth, then I remembered." Such joy. When is the last time, as a grown-up, you did something you wanted to shout from the rooftops? My child takes every day things, like pushing the button on the elevator, as a fun experience. Let's re-claim our joy and passion. Can you imagine running to work everyday? Let's begin to find our soul purpose. Kids and grown-ups should have all the fun!

Be Present

Be present with your children. It is the best gift you can give them.

Party Purpose!

What if your soul purpose in life was to celebrate yourself and others? What if you were able to live just to enjoy the pleasure of life? So, let's do it! Let's make our soul happy and give it a party purpose. How can you help someone in your life? How can you discover what their needs are? Do you know what your needs are? Let's try to figure it out together. I just discovered how bad I was at recognizing some of my loved ones needs. So my goal this week is to be present and uncover what motivates them. This doesn't mean life will be easy, but I think it will make our global society happier if we understand ourselves and each other. Cheers to your LIFE being the party.
